Rise – непереходный глагол: подняться со стула – to rise from a chair, подняться на ноги – to rise to one's feet. Ср. the sun rises at dawn 'солнце поднимается (всходит) на заре' и the sun ascends from dawn to noon 'солнце поднимается (по направлению к зениту) с рассвета до полудня'. Ascend в переходном значении часто взаимозаменяется с переходным глаголом mount: подниматься по лестнице – to ascend the stairs и to mount the stairs (в разговорном языке употребляется to go upstairs). Arise употребляется главным образом в метафорическом значении 'начинаться, возникать': поднялся шторм (туман) – a storm (mist) arose; этот вопрос часто поднимался – this question has often arisen.
